Haʻa means “humble” in Hawaiian.
In the summer of 2015 we started planting cacao trees at our 2.6 acre (~1 ha) homestead in Laupahoehoe on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.
In 2020 we harvested our first crop of cacao pods and we began processing our cacao beans into chocolate in small batches.
We steward the land using permaculture principles and regenerative farming practices.
What was once just a grassy plot of land is now planted with around 150 cacao trees interplanted with over 150 different species of tropical fruit and flowering trees. After six years it feels like we’ve only just begun.
