Today I planted a Shiikwaasaa tree which is a citrus native to Okinawa. It’s also called hirami lemon and the scientific name is Citrus depressa, I got this one from Ken Love. Shiikwaasaa translates to “eat sour” in the Okinawan dialect. The green unripe fruit is squeezed onto sashimi and broiled fish and the ripe orange fruit is enjoyed just peeled or turned into juices and jellies. I heard that they are trying to grow all kinds of tropical fruits in Okinawa including cacao. It’s been a long time, I would love to visit these farms in Japan one day.
