Today I planted an abiu tree that I got from Mary. Abiu is one of the first unusual exotic fruits I encountered when I moved to the Big Island. This fruit tastes like sugary water and can sometimes be a little bland. But a good one reminds me of the caramel part of flan which I really like. The flesh is translucent and jelly like and can be scooped out with a spoon. A large tree can produce hundreds of fruits every year. This fruit is from South America, and in Brazil it is grown near doorways, on empty lots and alley ways. Some people don’t like the latex part in the skin, it can get your knife sticky.
This one is a seedling abiu and not a grafted tree so I hope that I win the jack pot and score a flan flavor fruiting tree.
