Today I planted a rare relative of jaboticaba called anihuayo aka Plinia clausa which is from the swampy Peruvian Amazon and even there it is a rare fruit to find. Like jaboticaba, the trees produce fruits directly on the trunks of the tree but the fruits are much bigger and orange colored. Thanks Joe for sharing this one.
It is said that the anihuayo is probably the best tasting among all the jaboticaba varieties and there are hundreds of them. I wouldn’t know because I’ve only tried the common type that everyone grows here.
I did some counting today and the anihuayo is the 150th tree species that we planted here on the farm. Thats three times the diversity compared to the Hilo arboretum situated on 11 acres, which is about 4 times bigger than our place.
