Planted this one early in the morning on my own birthday, which felt like a fitting way to start the day.
The Basics
Almirajo is a large-ish tree that’s related to both cacao and durian, which puts it in interesting company even before you factor in the fruit.
Origin and Habitat
It comes from the Chocó region of Colombia, a famously wet and biodiverse stretch of rainforest, where it’s a fruit enjoyed by the locals but not one that’s traveled far beyond that.
What It Looks Like
There’s genuinely not much information available on this one online, which is part of the appeal honestly.
Uses and Flavor
Supposedly produces a fruit similar to eggfruit, though given its family it seems unlikely to actually taste like one. Haven’t tried it yet since the tree is still young.
Growing It Here
Mahalo to Joe for another rare tree for the orchard, one of several ultra-obscure species he’s brought onto the farm alongside atom and aguaí guaçú. Planted it the same morning as my birthday, before heading off later to a hat and ice cream party where Mary made me a flourless chocolate cake using cacao and sesame we grew ourselves. Still young, and nothing new to report on growth since, but it’s alive and that’s really all I’m asking of it at this stage.
