Today I planted ‘ulu (breadfruit), an air layer I made with Bobby. The mother tree in Haina is really tall and made large globe shaped fruits. Our other ‘ulu is the first tree Julia and I planted in 2014. The Ma‘afala type makes smaller fruits and provides us with major carbs.
I’ve learned to appreciate the versatility of ‘ulu as an ingredient. Tonight we had semi ripe ‘ulu fries for dinner and we made uluzagna a couple nights ago using ‘ulu instead of pasta sheets. It’s probably one of the most valuable trees for Hawaii’s food security if we want to rely less on imported food.
