Day 43: Today I planted a fig tree and they are really hard to establish here. We tried

Today I planted a fig tree and they are really hard to establish here. We tried a couple times already but they really don’t like wet roots. Since they need a lot of drainage I planted it on a hillside where I plan on building a retaining wall later. Dug the hole so it will drain out big time and backfilled it with cinder. Gave it a bunch of compost too… so hopefully this one should grow.

This is a Black Mission variety that we rooted a bunch of cuttings from our friend Sandy. Her mission fig in Honokaa is well over 10 years old and produces prolifically. She sells them to Merrimen’s restaurant up in Waimea so it must a good one!
