Today I planted a terrestrial orchid in the hapuu forest called Sobralia klotzscheana X virginalis. Sobralia at first glance looks like a bamboo. They grow wild along forest trails in parts of Ecuador and Central America. They produce a flower at their tips that look like cattleyas and they only last a day. This one is a cross between white flower ones and they will probably flower soon.
In the afternoon we had a small kine birthday celebration for Mary at 4-mile beach in Hilo. The ocean was calm so I swam out to explore the edge of the reef. Mary made everyone epic chicken bánh mì with freshly baked french bread. We brought summer rolls and a cheesecake and Alex made cocopuffs!
