A friend brought over fresh lychee and longan one day and it got me thinking about similar fruits, which led to planting this one.
The Basics
Langsat, Lansium parasiticum, is a tree in the mahogany family, Meliaceae — not related to lychee or rambutan despite the resemblance.
Origin and Habitat
Native to the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia.
What It Looks Like
Produces small, round, thin-skinned fruit growing in grape-like clusters, translucent white flesh inside.
Uses and Flavor
Eaten fresh, sweet with a slight tartness near the seed. Haven’t tried our own yet since these are still a long way from fruiting.
Growing It Here
Honestly didn’t do enough homework before planting it, only found out afterward that seedling trees can take up to 20 years to fruit. That’s patience I didn’t know I was signing up for.
