Mamey apple, Mammea americana, is a tree in the family Calophyllaceae — a different family and fruit entirely from mamey sapote, despite the similar name.
Origin and Habitat
Native to the Caribbean and northern South America.
What It Looks Like
A large tree bearing round, russet-brown fruit with firm, orange-yellow flesh inside.
Uses and Flavor
Eaten fresh or used in preserves and drinks; flavor is often described as a mix of apricot and pumpkin. No firsthand tasting notes from ours yet.
