Biodiversity

The farm is home to a growing agroforest, planted by hand between 2016 and 2022 with a long view in mind. While cacao is the heart of the system, it’s surrounded by an ever-evolving symphony of biodiversity — over 150 species of tropical fruit, flowering trees, herbs, and understory plants. Some of these trees began fruiting in 2023; others are still finding their roots. Together, they form a layered ecosystem where sunlight filters softly through the canopy, and every plant has a place and a purpose.

This agroforest was designed with cacao in mind — a tree that thrives in the shade of its elders. Tall canopy and support species were chosen and placed to shelter the cacao from wind and harsh sun, creating a forest-like microclimate that echoes its natural habitat. Each tree is planted not just for what it yields, but for how it supports its neighbors: offering mulch, nitrogen, pollinator habitat, or simply a rhythm to grow alongside. Here, everything is in conversation — growing, blooming, and bearing fruit in their own time.
