Day 80: The other day I bought a durian in Hilo and to my disappointment there was only

The other day I bought a durian in Hilo and to my disappointment there was only one tiny aril with a big seed in it. This must be some sort of right of passage for the novice durian enthusiast. I’m embarrassed to even say how much I paid for this one fruit. Maybe its not the right season or it wasn’t pollinated well. But at the very least I got a seed to plant out of it. Until I can discern which fruits are good, buying durian is a crapshoot.

Today I planted 9 durian seedlings that were growing in tiny pots (read: semi root bound) that I thought would be too wasteful to chuck into the compost pile. I planted three trees per hole and I’ll let the strongest ones live. May the odds be ever in your favor.
