Today we planted a dwarf Malayan yellow coconut that we got from Dash. These come from a very special stock of coconuts that Phil the coconut man collected and grew for decades on Kauai and they are guaranteed to stay short. I heard that the first fruits will basically touch the ground. When a dwarf coconut cross pollinates with a tall coconut, more than likely it will produce offspring that will express the tall genetics. So you need to be 100% sure before planting a “dwarf” coconut or else you have to learn how to climb.
We planted ten dwarf cocos about three years ago but none of them produced any cocos yet. We have a nice mix of dwarf malayan yellow, dwarf malayan red, and dwarf Samoan coconuts.
Lately it’s been really hot outside and I bought a case of canned coconut water to stay hydrated. We are hoping that starting next year we can harvest our own coconuts for drinking, and making coconut milk for haupia pudding.
