Day 8: Today I planted an Ohia tree

Day 8: Today I planted an Ohia tree that my friend Tim sprouted from seed 3 years ago.

Today I planted an Ohia tree that my friend Tim sprouted from seed 3 years ago. It completely outgrew it’s little pot and red aerial roots were hanging down the nursery table.

Ohia is both a pioneer and climax tree in a forest. You can see them growing out of the cracks of lava, and some of the mightiest trees in the old growth forest are the Ohias.

This is why I’m slowly phasing out my banana windbreak and replacing them with more permanent long term trees. It’s also next to our new compost pile too so it should be getting a good start.
