Today I planted a Borojo tree that we sprouted from seed over a year ago. It’s a small understory tree that likes the shade and apparently they are really hard to grow.
I tasted the fruit once and it was absolutely disgusting. It was sour like tamarind, but the texture is what made it awful… like wet clay and it got all stuck in my mouth and teeth like glue. Ugh.
In Colombia they make a drink out of it called Berraquillo that turns this pasty fruit into a delicious strawberry milkshake like drink by blending it with milk, honey, rum, and… a small live crab. This drink is supposed to be some sort of aphrodisiac, but I’ll just leave an interesting article in the comments that you can read.
If we do end up successfully growing this fruit, I think I will pass on the raw crab part of the recipe.
