Today I divided up a Pitcairnia atrorubens and potted them into 4 pots. Pits don’t look like bromeliads at all but they are the 2nd largest genus of bromeliads after tillansia. I found a bunch of coqui frogs today too and it seems like they are making a come back. This one had eggs.
Yesterday I wandered into Honokaa, saw Mel and then ended up at The Kohala Center’s demonstration farm where they now have what I think is the largest kalo collection in the state. I think close to 200 varieties of kalo!!?! And different kinds of awa (kava) too… Ka‘iana shared some Hiwa, Mapulehu, Mo‘i and Nene cuttings with me and he gave me a quick tutorial on how he propagates them. I’m impressed with what the team is doing and the demo farm is looking great!!!
So today I also made 12 cuttings of each awa variety… so 48 total and I hope they all take root.
All coqui frogs were promptly fed to the baby ducks thus completing the circle of life. Happy Earth Day everyone! 🌎
