Today I planted three awa nene which is one of the noble Hawaiian varieties that makes green stalks with spots on them. I planted them between some cacao trees to shade out the understory. This way we have to do less and less mowing eventually. At least the days are getting shorter now and the grass is not growing 3 inches per day. This is time of year to feel a sigh of relief from the overwhelming pressure of the guinea grasses and every other weedy obstacle on the farm.
