Today I planted about 100 white pineapple slips and tops we’ve been saving and there are a lot more to plant. I tilled a long row with manure and dolomite lime to fluff up the soil a little. Then I cut Xs and plugged in the slips into the weed mat firmly. We learned this method at Lyn and Geoff’s old farm in Wa’a wa’a and it is the most low maintenance way of growing pineapples and it keeps them relatively weed free. We plant our pineapples pretty close to eachother to maximize space. Pineapples can be planted in 50% shade and doesn’t mind the crowding.
I remember the first time I tried white pineapple. We were discovering parts of the Big Island before we moved and got to visit Nancy and Geri’s farm in Honalo. Nancy brought out some chilled cubed white pineapples and it blew me away. There are all kinds of delicious tropical fruits out there and many I haven’t even tried, but white pineapple ranks in my top 10 locally grown fruits in Hawaii.
