If you ever wanted me to leave the house these days there are two magic words – “plant sale”. We left the house early this morning for Julia’s appointment. The state nursery in Waimea held their annual native plant sale so I went to check it out. The sale started at 8 am and I arrived half past eight. There was already a long line. So I waited for about an hour and it was totally worth it.
I picked up a few maile vines, koa’ia, ‘iliahi, and wiliwili. I planted one of the wiliwili trees close to one that we planted four years ago. Julia sprouted that wiliwili from seed a while back.
Wiliwili is an endemic tree in the bean family that usually thrives on the upper slopes on the dry sides of the islands. The big ones look magestic and the flowers can be orange, yellow, pink, greenish or whiteish. If we are lucky one tree can produce multiple colored blooms simultaneously.
