So… I ended up leaving the house today too, to pick up a free ma’afala ‘ulu tree at the East Hawaii Outdoor Circle drive-thru tree giveaway event in Hilo. Thanks Ilana for giving us the heads up on the registration link!
I went ahead and planted the ‘ulu tree at the very front of the property. The tree is really healthy and I’m crossing my fingers it will make it because it’s a windy spot. Originally we were going to plant just one breadfruit but after realizing how awesome of a food source it is we decided to plant way more. This is ma’afala tree #4 and we have a hawaiian, pua’a and otea in the ground also.
The first ma’afala ‘ulu tree we planted was the first tree Julia and I planted here 6 years ago. Right now it’s loaded with fruits and we’ve been making a lot of fries with them. We’re planning on making one of our favorite dishes, uluzagna soon which involves slicing the ulu thin and using that to layer into the lasagna instead of pasta sheets.
