Julia and I got home late after adventuring around Hawi with our friend Joyce. When we returned home I planted another blackberry vine along the garden fence line. Out of all the berry varieties we planted the blackberry is the most productive one. When people see it they freak out because in some places it is considered a noxious vine. However, the kind we grow is a thornless variety so it is easy to maintain and to pick from.
Our blackberry vine usually produces berries year round but in the spring time they tend to get loaded with fruits. This is the time of year when we make a lot of jams and reductions for sauces. Blackberries are the last thing I thought would grow well here. Julia said that the Rosaceae family tends to adapt well to different climates. So I guess the lesson here is that you’ll never know what will grow well in your particular microclimate until you just give it a try.
