On day 75 I planted a bunch of pomegranate seeds and now Im going to start planting them out as a hedge where I’m trying to remove guinea grass. I got the seeds from Adam and I think they came from a tree growing in Hawi. It’s not really a dark red pulp type like the ‘Wonderful’, the seeds I planted were more pinkish and translucent. These poms seem to be growing vigorously so it is very promising.
Actually, one of the first things I’ve successfully planted was a pomegranate tree. Back in 2009 I was really getting into gardening and my friend Orlando asked if I could help transplant a pomegranate from Nuuanu to his co-workers place in Waimanalo.
Honestly I didn’t know what I was doing, but we dug out the tree carefully (kinda) and we immediately drove it to the east side and we dug a big hole. I remember being amazed how the soil was mostly sand in Waimanalo. We filled the hole with two bags of the Fox Farms kelp potting mix, planted it and hoped for the best.
Many years later Orlando worked at another job in downtown Honolulu and ran into his old coworker and heard that the tree grew big and healthy. She said that the tree produced so many fruits that she is always bringing fruits to work to share with everyone.
